Sarah Jessica Parker comments on absence of Kim Cattrall on SATC sequel during visit on Bravo show

Sarah Jessica Parker discussed the absence of Kim Cattrall from the Sex And The City sequel on Monday night’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Bravo.

Andy said he loved the way the sequel ‘And Just Like That…’ handled the absence of the Samantha Jones character that Kim, 65, originated on the HBO show.

Sarah said she could take no credit for it but that it was the work of the series showrunner and head writer Michael Patrick King and his extraordinary group of amazingly talented writers.

‘Samantha is not gone,’ said the 56-year-old actress wearing a long brown fitted Norma Kamali dress that she said she ‘bought right off the rack.’

‘The actress that played the role is no longer playing that role, but people are absent from your life when you don’t want them to be. You know, and I thought that in typical Michael Patrick fashion, he threaded it through with grace and dignity and respect and love and affection for that character. I thought it mimicked many friendships that challenge each other and struggle and want to remain connected in a way, because it’s too painful,’ she said.

Andy said viewers also wanted to know why she didn’t immediately call 911 when her husband Big had a heart attack.

‘Of course she called 911,’ said Sarah. ‘Didn’t you see the people behind moving the body.’

Andy said that people wanted to see her reach for the phone.

‘That’s an understandable and logical expectation,’ said Sarah. ‘It’s suspended animation, this moment where everything stops and then whatever collapsing of time that happens does not stop her from taking care of somebody, in a fashion that you would want and expect from your partner, or husband or wife.’

Sarah said Carrie ‘found the phone at some point, let’s quickly walk through this together. So in my head, she struggled through this moment and tried to get him to be responsive and then she came to her senses. I’m going to say after about two to three seconds, and then of course she called 911 and got all the help she needed from professionals.’

Andy then asked her whether she thought Che Diaz’s comedy set was actually funny.

‘I’m going to make a confession to everybody,’ Sarah said. ‘I have not seen episodes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 yet. It’s my problem.’

‘I feel that I’m not in a position to declare whether Che’s comedy is funny or not,’ she added.

Andy asked if there were any side characters that she hoped would come back.

‘We had a nice little taste of Bitsy [Von Muffling] which was a delight,’ Sarah said.

She said there were so many people over the course of their initial series but that they also had all these new amazing people who deserved time.

Andy turned the conversation to discuss Sarah’s play Plaza Suite on Broadway with her husband Matthew Broderick, 59. She said that they each play three different characters in scenes that happened in a suite in the Plaza Hotel in 1968.

‘Fairly soon after I met him,’ said Sarah.

Andy then asked her if she remembered their first kiss.

Early chemistry: ‘Fairly soon after I met him,’ said Sarah when asked how long it took her to realize that Matthew was ‘the one’

‘Oh yeah,’ said Sarah. ‘It was outside an apartment building and I was describing the other night as maybe our second kiss ever.’

Andy said it was fun to see them in a play together. He asked if they had ever allowed each other to go to bed angry with each other and she said. ‘Oh yeah, I’m sure we have.’

He asked her what was the most thoughtful gift that he gave her and she said her children.

One virtual fan asked Sarah what was her favorite recycled outfit on Just Like That and Sarah said ‘the Heidi dress’ that she always loved seeing. Sarah also cited Atelier Versace’s Mille Feuille gown as a favorite.

‘That’s a really good one, too, because it was sort of a miracle that arrived,’ said Sarah. ‘ It wasn’t going to arrive and then it was somewhere else and it was stuck and then they couldn’t get it out. And then it was August and everyone closes down in August.’

She said there was such suspense around the dress and when they finally got it she wondered if she would still be able to slither into it. Andy said he loved all the fittings in the Sex and the City fashion documentary. Sarah said that the fashion department of the show was special.

Andy took questions from virtual fans. One fan asked why John Corbett who played Aiden Shaw in the series said he was going to appear in several episodes of And Just Like That and then didn’t.

‘He actually reached out very kindly, cause he’s nothing if not a gentleman, and apologized for doing that as a joke,’ said Sarah. ‘Having said that, I think he would be well.. I’m not gonna, I mean, yes, all of it’s possible. All of it’s possible .’

Andy noted that he was ready for a season two of the show.

Two viewers then asked Sarah what it was like to be back on the set of Hocus Pocus 2 with Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy and asked if she could confirm the rumors that there was going to be another musical number with the three of them.

‘I just said, I said to my son, the day I realized that I had a year of reunions got back together with all the women or many of the women and a lot of the cast from Sex in the City, and then went straight on November 8th, to that set in Brooklyn in a van taken to Rhode Island to start Hocus Pocus where I was reunited with Kathy Najimy and Bette Midler. And it was amazing and funny and ridiculous and all sorts of things.’

Andy asked her if she ever had conversations with her idol Barbra Streisand about working together. She said no and said ‘ I don’t see her that often’ and that she had not had a lot of exchanges with her. Andy asked her if she thought Barbra had ever seen the Way We Were episode of SATC and she said ‘That’s a good question. I don’t know.’

‘Kim Kardashian is very, very nice,’ said Sarah. ‘That is for real. She is very lovely.’

She said ‘I don’t meet many celebrities.’

Sarah said ‘you’ pointing to Andy. ‘You are very nice.’

Andy then gave Sarah and Matthew his number one couple award and Sarah said ‘March 8th of this year we will have been together, ready folks, 30 years.’

Andy high-fived her and said ‘and they said it wouldn’t last.’
