The 3 Ways the Olsen Twins Helped Their Sister Elizabeth Avoid the Dark Sides of Hollywood

While Hollywood seems glamorous on the outside, many people are probably aware that the life of a celebrity is not always as great as it may seem.

Elizabeth Olsen—the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley—got a front row seat to Hollywood fame from watching the Olsen twins’ exciting career in the 1990s and 2000s. Now that Elizabeth is making a name for herself in show business, she has largely been able to avoid the trappings of celebrity life. In fact, Elizabeth has revealed some details about how her older sisters helped her navigate this world.

The Olsen twins influenced Elizabeth’s decision to not become a child star

It is common knowledge by now that Hollywood is not the best place to raise a child. Stories of child stars throughout the years have highlighted just how many issues a young star can develop in the entertainment industry.

While Mary-Kate and Ashley became well-known at a young age, Elizabeth decided she did not want to become a child star. In a new interview with Parade, Elizabeth revealed that she learned how much work was involved in being an actor, and she wanted to spend her childhood doing something else.

“What I saw my sisters do was work, not play, and I really enjoyed ballet, and I really enjoyed playing sports. It took away from that experience,” she shared. “My dad quite literally asked me to write a pros and cons list so that I could make an informed decision at the age of—I think I was in fourth grade, so you’re 9 I think. So I wrote a pros and cons list and I decided that it was more important for me to be able to do extracurriculars.”

When she decided to pursue acting as an adult, Elizabeth wanted to focus on the “history” and “intellectual experience” of the career, not the celebrity side.

The Olsen twins gave Elizabeth advice on who to work with in the industry

Mary-Kate and Ashley have been in show business since they were literal babies. As such, it’s not surprising that they have passed on to Elizabeth some knowledge of who’s who in Hollywood, which likely could have allowed Elizabeth to avoid unsavory situations.

Speaking to Us Weekly in 2017, Elizabeth revealed that her sisters have given her “a lot of advice” as well as recommended “people to work with.”

However, Elizabeth has often maintained that she does not rely on Mary-Kate and Ashley to get jobs. The shared with The Guardian in 2012, “I never got any job because of my sisters. I could have pulled a few strings through them, but I never needed to.”

The Olsen twins give Elizabeth advice on how to deal with the media

A celebrity’s relationship with the press can greatly affect their career. It’s not unheard of for news outlets to twist people’s words and paint a negative picture of them. Mary-Kate and Ashley likely saw how this played out growing up in Hollywood, and they gave Elizabeth advice on how to deal with the media.

“I was not caring what I was saying [in interviews] because I’d assumed no one would read it,” Elizabeth told Modern Luxury in 2017, according to W Magazine. “That’s when we’d have conversations. [Mary-Kate and Ashley] would say, ‘You know, even if you don’t think anyone’s going to read this article, someone might pull the quote later for [something else].’ It’s all part of how you hope someone interprets you, and how they frame who you are and the work you do.”

This led Elizabeth to create a rule for herself when speaking to the media. She explained, “If it only involves me, then I’ll share it, but if it involves another party ever, then I won’t. I don’t want to tell anyone else’s story.”
