Clogs are back for 2021, whether we like it or not

We’re not even a week in and 2021 has already brought its fair share of surprises (lockdown 3.0 being the main one).

But we’re here to say there’s another curveball that’s been thrown our way, this time in the world of fashion…

…clogs are back.

The chunky, clunky footwear is back for this year after being spotted on the 2020 designer catwalks. At Paris Fashion Week, Hermès sent models down the catwalk in a pair of smooth leather clogs with classic stud finish.

Similarly, influencers like Lucy Williams have been spotted in clogs – she teamed hers with a pair of chunky socks.

So it seems the ‘ugly’ shoes are back for 2021 – almost 50 years since they debuted in the fashion world.

Whether you like them or not, there’s no denying they are pretty ideal for a WFH lifestyle – as they can be slipped on and off when need be, in a similar style to slippers.

Wooden clogs date back to the medieval period and were typically peasant shoes, made from cheap materials that offered protection from farming and other physical tasks. But they’re proving popular over recent months with their practical, effortless appeal – when formal shoes simply haven’t been necessary.

There are also so many different styles to choose from, depending on your personal taste – from classic wooden options to Fabrizio Viti’s daisy versions and Gucci’s open-toed styles.

Clogs have followed in the footsteps of other unlikely fashion trends which have come back around, including velour tracksuits and the visible thong – both of which resurfaced in 2020.

No doubt we can expect more fashion surprises to come in 2021.
