Meghan Markle said to follow 3 style rules to make her outfits ‘look expensive’

Meghan Markle brought a fresh perspective to royal style when she joined the Royal Family; with her casual ripped jeans, messy buns and bespoke designer pieces.

But there are a few style rules the Duchess of Sussex is said to follow according to two fashion experts; Meghan’s Mirror resident stylist Audrey, and celebrity stylist Miranda Holder.

Minimalism

Audrey said: “A white button-down shirt is the most basic item that should be in any minimalist’s closet. A nice cotton shirt with a clean cut will mix with everything in your closet.”

It was back in 2017 for the Invictus Games when Meghan made her first official appearance as Prince Harry’s girlfriend wearing an airy button-down white shirt by her friend Misha Nonoo.

She demonstrated the French tuck by slipping her Husband shirt into the waistband of her skinny jeans, and the world was immediately enamoured by her relaxed personal style.

Two years later, the Duchess commissioned Misha Nonoo to create a classic, office-appropriate shirt for her charitable capsule collection benefitting Smart Works.

Since moving to America, Meghan has been seen wearing white shirts regularly; either tucked into smart shorts or thrown on over a dress at the Farmer’s Market.

Meghan’s clothes are not the only minimalist choices she makes; when it comes to jewellery, Meghan “favours unfussy accessories and focuses on quality over quantity, which looks expensive”, Miranda commented. “Meghan keeps her style understated and clean, letting her beauty and elegance do the talking.”

Neutrals

The advantage of creating a wardrobe “mainly out of neutrals is that they all mix and match effortlessly”, and it also makes getting dressed or curating an outfit much easier.

Miranda said the focus then shifts onto “the fabric and silhouette” of pieces instead of colours matching or clashing, and once this has been mastered, it creates a “chic, expensive look”.

A “key neutral item” in Meghan’s closet is a pair of pumps and Audrey suggested the several suede pairs Meghan owns create a “more dressy feel”, and adds to the illusion of luxury and wealth.

The stylist noted how a “good fit is very important for heels and since they are classic, they can be an investment purchase”, and how those wearing heels “always want to be comfortable; posture speaks volumes and if your feet hurt, it will show”.

Quality pieces

Meghan’s camel coat is a “hero piece” in her wardrobe and it fast became her “signature style” for the colder months. The colour of the coat means it pairs well with “everything from print and colour to neutrals”, and hits the minimalist style rule.

Audrey said a camel coat is “year-round neutral, but navy and black also work well”. To complete an outfit, “a well-constructed quality wool coat or cardigan-style coat are very good investment pieces”.

“The length can vary depending on preference, although the most versatile would be knee length,” she added.

In terms of shoes, Audrey said Meghan likes to “invest in good quality flats” as “they can be dressed down or dressed up for the evening, and they work for all seasons”.
