Billie Eilish’s 2021 release ‘Happier Than Ever’ features the song ‘Everybody Dies’
Even as a teenager, Eilish made her mark on the music industry, earning an Academy Award for her song “No Time to Die” and several Grammy Awards for the 2019 release When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go.
After months of anticipation, Eilish released her 2021 album Happier Than Ever, featuring fan-favorite tracks “My Future,” “Billie Bossa Nova,” and “Happier Than Ever.” Also included on Happier Than Ever is “Everybody Dies,” the original song written by Eilish and FINNEAS.
According to a fan analysis on Genius, this song discusses “honesty, immortality, lockdown, the future, and hints at heartbreak.” Death lingers as a theme in several other Happier Than Ever songs and the “Everything I Wanted” music video, where Eilish and her brother appear to drive off a cliff together.
Even in When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go, Eilish echoed dark themes in her music. “Bury a Friend” and its corresponding music video tells a story from the perspective of the monster under Eilish’s bed.
Billie Eilish is ‘happy’ that ‘all things’ come to an end
Since its Spotify debut, this track has earned over 40 million plays. (Other Happier Than Ever tracks received millions of streams, including “Happier Than Ever,” which has over 550 million Spotify plays.) “Everybody Dies” touches on topics yet to be explored by Eilish, including her someone optimistic view on death and things coming to an end.
“It makes me feel happy that all things end,” Eilish said in her now-deleted Spotify commentary. “It’s also very sad and sentimental.”
This perspective is echoed in the second verse of “Everybody Dies,” when Eilish sings, “I just wonder why you’d wanna stay / If everybody goes / You’d still be alone.” From the narrator’s point of view, it’s better to spend less time with loved ones than to spend more time alone.
Other ‘Happier Than Ever’ songs earned nominations from the Grammy Awards
With seven Grammy wins under her belt, Eilish also earned a handful of Grammy nominations for the upcoming award show. None of those were for “Everybody Dies,” some were for “Happier Than Ever” — Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video.
Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter To Los Angeles, a live production available exclusively on Disney’s streaming platform, earned a Grammy nomination in the Best Music Film category. The album as a whole earned Grammy nods for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
In addition to her upcoming Coachella performance, Eilish embarked on her North America-based tour in 2022. Music by Eilish is available on most major streaming platforms.
