Naga Munchetty bids emotional farewell to BBC colleague as he quits TV show

Naga Munchetty has paid a touching tribute to her BBC colleague Stephen Smith following his decision to leave Newsnight.

The BBC Breakfast presenter took to social media on Wednesday (September 28) to bid him an emotional farewell, describing him as a "bloody decent person".

Following the news that Stephen has decided to leave his role as Newsnight culture correspondent, Naga wrote: "One of the best creative wordsmiths/journalists I've ever had the honour to work with.

"And above all, a bloody decent person. Good luck, Stephen!"

Stephen announced his exit from the broadcaster with a statement to his social media, writing: "Some professional news – and it’s goodnight from me for the last time.

"I was fortunate to meet a who’s who of everyone who matters in arts & culture, from Scorsese to Stormzy.

"Thanks to the producers, camera crews and picture editors I worked with – at least they were, mostly, getting paid."

Naga, 47, was not the only BBC star to share a message of support to Stephen online.

BBC's health reporter Jim Reed added: "Some of the best packages I’ve ever seen on Newsnight Steve. You’ll be missed."

Radio 4's Evan Davis wrote: "Stephen, you are one of a kind. And also very kind. And funny. And knowledgeable."

It comes after Naga playfully shut down her BBC Breakfast colleague Mike Bushell live on air after he claimed she looked "perplexed" following his sports segment.

Mike, 56, discussed the news that EFL clubs have considered moving their kick-off times forward from 3pm to lunchtime in a bid to save money on energy bills.

Mike said: "If you think about Carlisle going down to Exeter, if it's an afternoon kick-off you could probably set off on the same day but they may need to set off the night before for a one o'clock kick-off and then you're talking about hotel bills."

After a short pause, He pointed out: "You look perplexed, Naga."

She replied: "No, i'm not perplexed. I just think football fans are quite willing to travelling aren't they and two hours, I can't see it making a big difference."
