Apple to host its annual Worldwide Developer Conference online for third year in a row with new versions of iPhone, Mac and iPad software expected to be unveiled

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) will be online again this year, with the tech giant confirming it will be held from June 6 to June 10.

The iPhone maker is expected to provide updates on new software, including the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 16. Although it is unlikely to be released until the Fall alongside the next version of the iPhone.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic forced it online in 2020, the annual event was held in San Jose, California, with thousands of developers coming in from around the world.

Apple confirmed the while the bulk of the event will be online, and free for all, some developers and students will be invited to Apple HQ in Cupertino, California.

The image used to promote the event featured the ‘Swift’ programming language bird. This is the main language used to create software for Apple products.

The firm is expected to unveil iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9, and, although new hardware is unlikely, we may see an Apple silicon Mac Pro.

Apple confirmed WWDC22 will showcase the latest updates to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, and make engineers available to developers.

This will allow them to learn how to create apps based on the latest updates and initiatives built into the new versions of Apple’s operating systems.

‘At its heart, WWDC has always been a forum to create connection and build community,’ said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations and Enterprise and Education Marketing.

‘In that spirit, WWDC22 invites developers from around the world to come together to explore how to bring their best ideas to life and push the envelope of what’s possible.

‘We love connecting with our developers, and we hope all of our participants come away feeling energized by their experience.’

There are about 30 million registered Apple developers, according to the tech giant, and delivering the event online opens it up to many more people.

The firm says it will offer a wider range of information sessions, learning labs and ‘lounges’ where attendees can chat and meet with Apple staff.

While the bulk of the event will be online only, Apple said there will be a day for developers and students to meet at Apple Park on June 6.

They will be able to watch the keynote and ‘State of the Union’ videos – that will be pre-recorded and feature leading Apple executives, as a group.

‘Space will be limited, and details about how to apply to attend will be provided on the Apple Developer site and app soon,’ Apple said.

For the third year, Apple will also support students who love to code with the Swift Student Challenge. This is the programming language built by Apple.

It is used throughout the Apple system, and includes an iPad App called Swift Playgrounds, that lets people learn the language using interactive lessons.

For this year’s challenge, students from around the world are invited to create a Swift Playgrounds app project on a topic of their choice, and they can submit their work through April 25.
