A biblical prophecy was fulfilled when a flaming rock "the size of a car" crashed down to Earth before shattering in a river, a witness claims.

Peter Mcdonald, 80, says he watched a meteor soar over him in on an evening dog walk near his home in Darwen, Lancashire.

Stunned by what he saw, Peter headed out the next morning to hunt down the giant rock he believes proves "life is up in the stars".

What confused him most about the supposed meteor is how it first landed on a dirt track only to smash into smithereens in a nearby river with no fragments overspilling onto the banks.

Peter said: "What I saw was like a ball on fire, from the front of the ball around to the tail. It was the size of a small car and was burning bright orange when it came in and it had a massive tail on it.

"I thought it was going to crash on top of the river behind me but it cleared the river, it was very dark and I had my dog with me and I thought, am I going to find it at this time of day?

"So I went round again back to the river and I knew right away what it was, all the pieces funnily enough had shattered.

"All the pieces of that meteorite were in water, there was none on the bank at my side of the river and there was none on the far side on the bank."

"I found the impact spot where it crashed onto a dirt track road yet all the pieces went in the river, some went downstream others went up."

Peter wasted no time in filling his pockets with rock, which he divvied out to a fire fighter to check for radiation, the local heritage centre and a few of his pals, one of whom put it up on display in their shop.

Concerned about a fiery ball from space landing in a river of drinking water, Peter contacted the local utilities firm but says he never heard back.

The bizarre incident took place in 1997 but only now has Peter made the connection between what he saw and a prophecy from the Bible's Old Testament.

Peter says the Darwen meteor fits Revelation chapter eight perfectly, not least he says because another of the three incidents in the prophecy has also been fulfilled.

The passage tells the story of angels sounding their trumpets one by one and launching something down to earth, in the case of Darwen reads: "A great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter."

Peter believes he has seen evidence of another coming true in green grass being "burned up" and speculates more is to come in the way of the other angels' actions.

Peter said: "It was weird and it states in the Revelation that it will fall on the spring mountain water and I've seen a photograph with a river at the bottom and as soon as I saw that picture, I knew it had happened somewhere else.

"Now the prophecies to me are spooky but it is true, believe it.

"The prophecy proves there's life over in the stars."
