Celebrity ‘Dumbo’ goat with record-breaking ears sees them grow even longer

A celebrity goat's ears have grown even longer since its owner approached Guinness World Records.

Simba has drawn obvious comparisons to Disney's Dumbo the elephant since her birth last month but despite only being a few weeks old he is already world famous.

Breeder Mohammad Hasan Narejo had already announced he was trying to get Simba's 19 inch ears officially measured, but now he reckons they have grown to a staggering 21 inches.

To keep the Nubian kid fit and healthy in Karachi, Pakistan, Mohammad has turned to Islam's holy book the Quran to fend off evil spirits.

Mohammad said: "Simba's Pakistan name must roam the whole world.

"We recite Koranic verses and blow on him to cast away the evil eye.

"Following a long tradition we inherited from our elders, we have fastened a black thread around him that is fortified with Koranic verses."

Guinness World Records is yet to run a category for 'longest-eared goat' but with Mohammad having to stop Simba standing on his massive lugholes, he's confident of their chances.

Simba's ears are so long in fact that Mohammad has made a harness to keep them wrapped on his neck and back.

By achieving record status, Mohammad hopes Pakistan will enjoy an elevated reputation for goat breeding — even if Simba's ears are the result of a genetic mutation.

The young Nubian goat was born on the Nagra Farm in Karachi, Pakistan on June 5, and can't even manage to lift her ears off the ground.

Unfortunately, the kid's owner Muhammad Hassan Narejo missed a trick by not calling it Dumbo, instead opting for Simba which means lion in Swahili.

Muhammad is hoping that the goat, now a local celebrity, will become world famous as he said: "We hope soon Simba will be a Guinness World Record holder."

He also confirmed that she's in good health despite her strange features.

Nubian goats all have long ears compared to other breeds, earning them the nickname lop-eared goats but not as freakishly long as Simba's.

Nubian goats' long ears are the result of years of evolution and help them deal with the scorching temperatures of Pakistani summers.

In some parts of the country, the mercury can hit as high as 47C, meaning that the animals need a larger surface area so they can dissipate heat quickly.

Pakistan is the third-largest goat-producing country in the world, with around 54 million of them on its farms.

Some breeds are raised for meat and some are used for both meat and milk.

Nubian goats produce a high-quality, high-butterfat milk, which can be drunk or used to make ice cream, yogurt, cheese and butter.
