Britain recorded record highs in July with the Met Office confirming temperatures soared to 40.3C (104.54F) on July 18 in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. The nation has continued to experience high temperatures and prolonged periods without rainfall have forced several regions under hosepipe bans.

The UK’s July heatwave was reportedly made 10 times more likely due to human-caused activities, according to a scientific study.

Study co-author Friederike Otto, of Imperial College London, who leads the World Weather Attribution group, said: “In Europe and other parts of the world, we are seeing more and more record-breaking heat waves causing extreme temperatures that have become hotter faster than in most climate models.

“It’s a worrying finding that suggests that if carbon emissions are not rapidly cut, the consequences of climate change on extreme heat in Europe, which already is extremely deadly, could be even worse than we previously thought.”

The Earth has reportedly warmed by 1.1C (33.98F) in the last 200 years since the industrial revolution.

Global warming is expected to reach 1.5C (34.7F) within the next 20 years.
