Prime Minister Liz Truss is due to lift the UK’s fracking ban despite the risk of “serious” environmental damage. But do you support this decision? Vote in our poll.

Lord Deben, chair of the Climate Change Committee, has urged Ms Truss to “look at the facts” before giving a green light to resume drilling for shale gas. In an interview with The Times, he cautioned: “My only advice [to Truss] is one has to look at the facts.

“The facts are that you have to deal with fracking in an environmentally sensible way or otherwise you have serious results.”

Fracking was banned in 2019 after scientific analysis of shale gas extraction exposed the risk of seismic activity.

Lord Deben added that fracking on home soil would be “very expensive” and warned that it would not impact spiralling energy prices.

He explained: “The price of gas isn’t fixed by whether we get it out of British fields or the North Sea, the price of gas is set internationally.

“If you’re really trying to deal with the cost of living crisis, these are not the solutions.”

In a similar message, now-Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, said in February as business secretary, that fracking firms “won’t sell shale gas to UK consumers below the market price. They’re not charities.”

Officials are due to publish a review by the British Geological Survey (BGS) of evidence on fracking this week.

A leaked copy of the report, obtained by The Guardian, said that predicting such earthquakes “remains a challenge”.

It also says there are still “significant existing knowledge gaps” and problems remain in intensifying safe fracking sites.

The BGS offers little evidence that enough progress has been made since the ban was introduced in November 2019 to resume.

The Conservative Party manifesto promised in 2019 to only resume fracking if “the science shows categorically that it can be done safely”.

Trade body UK Onshore Oil and Gas, has claimed that five companies are considering fracking.

A Government spokesman said: “Making the most of our own gas resources makes us less dependent on imports and helps maintain the security of the UK’s energy supply in both the short and long term.

“Drawing on lessons from around the world, we will make sure it is done as safely as possible and where there is local support.”
