The Canadian musician, 33, showed off her new ink just weeks after telling the world she was “ready to die” on the Red Planet, Mars. Grimes is the partner of Elon Musk, 49, and the mother of his seventh child who the couple have bizarrely named X Æ A-Xii (X Ash A Twelve). The pop star took to Instagram on Monday to reveal another oddity, showcasing an intricate pattern tattoed across her entire back.

The intersecting and tangled up lines were tattoed using white ink, which at first glance leaves the impression of scarring.

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, shared a photo of her freshly inked back while still in the tattoo chair.

She captioned the image: “Full back in white ink by @tweakt w sum help from the alien computer brain of @nusi_quero

“Don’t have a good pic cuz it hurts too much and I need to sleep haha, and it’ll be red for a few wks, but gonna be beautiful alien scars. Hope everyone’s having a good day”

Grimes was tattooed by artist Tweakz and Nusi Quero, who used computer algorithms to generate the pattern.

He explained on Twitter: “Last night we co-designed a full back tattoo (w my brilliant friend Tweakz) for @Grimezsz.

“It was half hand drawn then half procedurally generated, then they banged out the whole thing in one go.

“Such a beautiful experience and talisman for her world. Electric energy is abuzz.”

He then shared a brief video clip of the tattoo being generated or “grown” in a computer programme.

Elon Musk and Grimes are no strangers to the weird and fantastical and have attracted some criticism in the time they have been together.

The South African billionaire and SpaceX chief has been daring the singer since at least May 2018, when they first debuted as a couple at the Met Gala in New York.

They have a son together – born May 4, 2020 – who they controversially named X Æ A-12.

However, the pair was forced to change the boy’s name in 2020 after they encountered a stumbling block in California state law.

The state’s law prohibits names from containing any digits, so the couple was forced to replace the 12 with roman numerals.

The boy, who is only 11 months old, is now named X Æ A-Xii, which is pronounced X Ash A Twelve.

Explaining the unusual choice, Elon Musk said on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast the name is a call back to the “coolest plane ever”.

He said: “It’s just X, the letter X, and then the AE is like pronounced ‘ash’.

“Yeah, and then A12 is my contribution. Archangel 12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever.”

The “X” and “Æ” meanwhile are meant to represent the “unknown variable” and artificial intelligence, respectively.

Elon Musk is presently busy with the Starship programme, aiming to put boots on Mars before the end of the decade.

His girlfriend revealed in February this year she was ready to make the trip, even offering to become a manual labourer in Earth’s first human colony on Mars.

She said: “Manual labour until death most likely, but hopefully that can change”.
