Facebook, Messenger and Instagram are DOWN: Frustration as thousands of social media users in US and UK are unable to access sites or send messages

Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger all appear to have gone down today, with users worldwide complaining of issues.

According to Down Detector, a website which monitors such outages, reports of problems first began to surface at about 15:55 BST (10:55 ET).

Users have said they cannot access Facebook via the app or website, while there also seems to be problems accessing Facebook Messenger.

Instagram, which is also owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, appears to be having issues, too. 

It is unclear what is the cause of the outage.

More than 2,600 users have reported issues with Instagram, according to Down Detector, with 3,200 experiencing problems with Facebook Messenger. 

Nearly 89 per cent of Messenger users said they were having problems with sending and receiving messages.

A further 8 per cent have had issues with the app, while 3 per cent said they could not log in at all. 

Hundreds more have complained about Facebook.

Big cities in the US – including New York – as well as London, Manchester and Birmingham in the UK are among the areas where most problems have been reported.

‘Instagram messages not working on the website. OK on iPhone app,’ one user said on Down Detector.
