Glastonbury queue begins as revellers fume stewards woke them up to move 10ft

  • Traffic chaos and hordes of campers descending on sleepy rural Somerset can only mean one thing, the world famous Glastonbury Festival is back.

Early bird revellers buzzing for a five/ six-day weekend of warm booze, ropey toilets and live music as far as the eye can see, rocked up to Worthy Farm on Tuesday night.

It wasn’t until 8am on Wednesday, though, that land owner Michael Eavis’ daughter Emily gave a 10 second countdown to swinging wide open the first gates.

Among those waiting up to 18 hours to enter the festival to bag a prime camping spot was Twitter user Jax McLeod who at 4.46am today fumed: “@glastonbury thanks to the security guards for waking us up at 4am while in the queue while we were all sleeping. Just to move us 10 feet along!! Pointless.”

National Highways has warned of “very busy” roads in the area but arguably a better message was issued by the Met Office which forecasts occasional showers until Friday before scorching 26C weekend heat.

A social media user summed up all the senses of what TV viewers of the festival won’t quite grasp from the comfort of their own home. “You don’t get the full Glastonbury experience on live stream..,” they wrote. “The sights, the smells, the mud, the queue for the portaloos, someone falling into your tent in the middle of the night and throwing up…”
