Many F1 drivers, including Sir Lewis, have been bombarded with criticism over the last few years as they try to distance the sport from its impact on the environment. Sir Lewis’ critics say that ranting about veganism and sharing his fears about the environment are hypocritical as he zooms around racecourses across the world.

The most recent criticism came in the form of TV personality Jeremy Clarkson, who appeared to try and get in Sir Lewis’ head ahead of his Grand Prix Race that takes place today.

The Grand Tour presenter slammed Sir Lewis for being too “woke” just as the COP26 climate summit was beginning, adding: “All this might work well on social media but in the real world, where people live, it doesn’t work at all.”

But Mr Rosberg disagrees and appears to be living proof of what can be achieved in the “real world”.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Mr Rosberg said: “I’m proud of the way my sport is going because they just announced synthetic fuels for 2030 and all these steps are the right way and they really care.

“The new CEO Stefano Domenicali really cares about sustainability.

“They banned single used plastics, and at the Zandvoort race, they made the most sustainable race of all time where 80 percent of the visitors arrived on public transport or by bicycle.

“There are loads of examples where there’s huge progress.”

Mr Rosenberg is qualified to talk on this subject. He is making huge waves in the green technology and investment space.

The 36-year-old is the co-founder of the Greentech Festival, a platform that brings together start-ups, corporations, environmental activists, politicians and more actors involved in the green space.

He told Express.co.uk: “It all started with Formula E because there was a race in Berlin and I thought it would be so cool to do a whole green technology show with conferences and awards all around that race and that’s how we then really made it happen and it was a big success.”

And since then, Mr Rosberg’s project has expanded.

Earlier this week, Mr Rosberg, along with his founders Marco Voigt and Sven Krueger, took their Greentech Festival award ceremonies to London.

Mr Rosberg said: “Green technologies are essential now for us to hit our climate goals and it’s a fascinating time with all these opportunities. “

While Formula E promotes electric cars, Formula 1 is also working to banish the old gas-guzzling stereotypes and address its relevance to a world focused on clean energy.

It aims to achieve a net zero-carbon footprint by 2030, with 100 percent sustainable fuels introduced long before and a ban on single-use plastics.

But while Mr Rosberg champions green tech and is a huge advocate for reducing emissions through new technologies, he has not forgotten his roots.

When asked for his prediction for the F1 Grand Prix today in Mexico City, Mr Rosberg told Express.co.uk: “It’s a phenomenally tight battle, everybody’s on the same level so it’s going to be so exciting and I don’t know who’s going to win.”

Mr Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton had a fierce rivalry back when he was still competing in the sport.

Mr Rosberg stepped down from the sport as a driver in 2016 after he beat Sir Lewis in a race in Abu Dhabi, winning his first ever world title.
