Woman went shopping for fish dinner only to return home with rescued live pet

A woman buying a fish was shocked to discover it was still alive despite it being on ice for 48 hours at a fishmonger.

Cindy Lao was amazed to find that the Crucian carp she bought in London was still alive a day after she put it in her fridge in her Cheltenham home, nearly 100 miles away.

She and her partner, Paul Lewis-Borman, quickly ran a bath to make sure that they could keep the audacious fish alive for a while longer, GloucestershireLive reported.

Paul said: “She called me down as she had thought she had seen the Crucian carp’s gills moving and asked me what I thought. They certainly were.

“I was in two minds about whether to put the poor thing out of its misery but Cindy said ‘no, it is a miracle he is still alive’. So we got a bowl of water to put him in”, he added.

While Lazarus, as the couple named him, seemed to be struggling for a while, he luckily made a full recovery after spending several days in the couple’s bathroom.

“We had nowhere to keep him except the bath and luckily we have another shower room. Needless to say he could not stay there and it did put you off when you were trying to use the toilet”, Paul said.

Lazarus was thankfully rehomed after Paul reached out to members of the Pets4Home forum asking if anyone wanted to take him in.

He said a woman with a pond big enough for Koi carp reached out and took him in.

Paul said: “He had been through a lot. He was sandwiched between all those dead fish for all that time and was nearly dinner. Cindy certainly bought fresh fish that day.

“We are pleased he now has a good home. The lady told us he now has a best fish friend who he happily is swimming about with in his new home”.
