Comedy legend Jennifer Saunders has shared her thoughts of modern comedy, suggesting her jokes in 90s BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous wouldn’t pass in today’s society. The star has worked as a writer and performer in the world of comedy throughout her career. But, in a recent interview, she hit out at today’s “woke” era for destroying comedy.

Jennifer has worked in comedy for a number of years but is perhaps best known for writing and starring in her sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.

The hit series often referred to as Ab Fab, saw her star alongside Joanna Lumley.

She’s also famed for her sketch show French and Saunders which she made alongside her comedy partner Dawn French.

But, looking back at her career, the star has now suggested some of her jokes wouldn’t be allowed in today’s “woke” society.

Jennifer played heavy drinking PR expert Edina Monsoon in BBC’s Ab Fab from 1994 to 2004.

Her comical rants on the show went down a treat with viewers, but Jennifer says the inevitable complaints they would spark today would prevent it from being made.

The star revealed she thinks modern culture has changed comedy from the kind of content she used to make.

Jennifer confessed she believes if she wrote the show today she may talk herself out of writing certain jokes.

“I think people do talk themselves out of stuff now because everything is sensitive,” she added.

The comic explained issues surrounding sensitivity stops a lot of the fun in comedy, hinting she misses the days of silly jokes.

Jennifer claimed comics who would nowadays be under fire were trailblazers in their heyday.

Her comments come after a series of popular classic comedies have been branded with discriminatory language warnings by the BBC.

Comedies hit with the warnings include Dad’s Army, Blackadder and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

John Cleese has also recently hit out at the BBC for pulling the legendary Germans episode of his hit comedy series Fawlty Towers.

Jennifer has recently reunited with her comedy partner Dawn French as the pair launched their own podcast.
