Dan Walker denies he caused Neighbours axe as fans question Channel 5 pay packet

Dan Walker has denied he killed off telly soap Neighbours.

Channel 5 has pulled its funding on the Aussie show and since no new backer has been found, it is being axed.

Fans have pointed out that this occurred around the time the BBC Breakfast presenter was lured over to the station for a rumoured £1.5million deal.

It has led to diehard fans raging on social media with comments such as: “Channel 5 cancels Neighbours and their first big signing is Dan Walker? Think I will pass."

Dan has now hit back. He said: “Don’t blame me for Neighbours. Don’t give me Neighbours grief.

“Do you think I went into my first meeting and went ‘If you sign me you get rid of Neighbours… Ramsay Street is gone’. I wish I had that level of power because I would have kept Neighbours forever.

“For the Neighbours brothers and sisters out there, I loved Neighbours growing up although my dad hated it. I was in the Plain Jane Superbrain, Daphne and the Scott and Charlene era.”

Meanwhile Dan – who fronts the weeknight show 5 News At 5 – claims he keeps his cool on TV by taking a leaf out of Ant and Dec’s books.

He added: “Why are Ant and Dec the best presenters on TV? Because when something goes wrong they just tell you and don’t try and pretend it’s not happened.

“If you have got a good relationship with your viewers and understand what they want that’s the secret to everything.

“You can obsess over things in TV that don’t matter. Just treat it like normal life. Laugh it off if you can and move on.”
