EastEnders’ Janine Butcher (played by Charlie Brooks) has opened up about the fate of her character over the Christmas period. The scheming Albert Square resident is set to marry her beau Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) on the BBC soap, but as is tradition on the soap, tying the knot may not be as simple as that. Charlie opened up on the huge storyline between Mick and Janine, which has built up for over 18 months.

Charlie spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the perils of getting married over Christmas in Walford.

Janine looks like the winner in the battle against Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) for Mick’s affection.

The car crash she stitched his ex-wife up for is the only thing hanging over her. Scarlett (Tabitha Byron) is the only one who knows Janine was not where she said she was on that fateful night.

Charlie said: “There’s definitely deep-rooted fear around her, as Scarlett is a wild card, and Janine’s never really had that close bond with her.

“She has tried a little bit, but she’s never quite gotten there, so I don’t think she feels safe. I think Janine gets a bit weirded out by her own daughter.”

The soap legend added: “It’s only Scarlett, at this point, who could really mess it all up.”

During the big day, Ricky Butcher (Sid Owen) appears without Mick by his side, in scenes that will panic the pregnant bride.

On the shock for Janine, Charlie revealed: “She’s panicking. Janine feels so hard done by all of the time.

“In her head, people screw her over all of the time, and none of it is her fault. She can’t see her part in anything.”

The actor declared: “There’s definitely a lack of self-awareness. But I think it’s just panic, initially.”

In official spoilers for the soap, Janine’s panic before the big day reaches new levels as she sees her deck of cards potentially falling down.

The bride-to-be tells her worried daughter they will be leaving their beloved Queen Vic and Scarlett fears this is due to the infamous photo of Frankie Lewis (Rose Ayling-Ellis).

In the background of the photo, Janine can be seen disposing of some bloody clothes from the car crash they were involved in.

Linda was arrested for drink-driving after Janine put her passed-out body into the driving seat, but Mick’s ex luckily dodged a prison sentence.

A stressed Janine will demand Scarlett doesn’t let slip their secret and blackmails her fearful daughter into keeping quiet.

Reflecting on her departure Charlie looked back fondly on the impact her divisive character has had on the Square.

She remarked: “I’ve had the best year and a half getting back into Janine’s shoes. She’s so fun to play.

“But I also love playing all the vulnerable stuff with Janine as well. I’m an actress, so I want to do everything.

“I also feel like if she was to stay in the show, the character might not be as strong somehow.”
