Emmerdale star reveals what it's like playing Cathy since 4 weeks old

Emmerdale star Gabrielle Dowling has been at the centre of many incredible storylines over the years as Cathy Hope, with her biggest to date having taken place within the last year.

Cathy, as viewers will recall, tormented April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) in an online bullying narrative. She has since made amends for what she’s done, and more recently, she’s right by best mate Amelia Spencer’s (Daisy Campbell) side amid her struggles.

Gabrielle, who has played the role of Cathy since she was four weeks old, has been acknowledged for her incredible work on the ITV soap, having received a nomination for Best Young Performer at the Inside Soap Awards.

‘I’m really excited to have been nominated,’ she told Metro.co.uk. ‘It’s great to be recognised for my efforts following my first big storyline whilst enjoying it and learning on the job!

‘I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to build the role that I’ve grown up with and develop the character of Cathy whilst learning from experienced actors and directors.

‘I’ve been in the soap since I was 4 weeks old so it’s second nature to me. It’s one big family, everyone gets on and it’s a great atmosphere to work in.

‘The studio and village have been a huge part of my life along with my brother’s [Sebastian, who plays Heath]). Having celebrated birthdays on set allowed me to feel close with the people around me and showed me how much of a family we are.’

Gabrielle added that she’s ‘loved’ the storylines that have been given to her thus far, and revealed that she would like to develop further with more ‘challenging’ ones in the future.

Speaking of challenging, the bullying storyline last year was a ‘challenge’ for Gabrielle, but she told us that she was determined to show that bullying does happen.

‘Also helping the audience to understand why some people bully was important for me,’ she added. ‘It’s definitely not in my nature!’

Emmerdale, as viewers are aware, is on the cusp of its 50th anniversary, and while we know some of what’s to come, much is being kept under wraps.

Gabrielle, however, couldn’t be more excited.

‘It’s great to be involved in the 50th anniversary episodes and to be working alongside cast members who I don’t always get the chance to work with and learn from’,’ she concluded.

We can hardly wait!

Gabrielle is nominated for Best Young Performer at this year’s Inside Soap Awards.
