How many episodes are in Three Families?

Three Families will be a two-part series on BBC One.

Episode one of the show will premiere Monday, May 10 with the second episode following the next night on Tuesday, May 11.

The BBC synopsis of the series says it “explores the emotional background to a controversial campaign, which culminated in the UK government forcing a liberalisation of the law in Northern Ireland”.

The story will focus on the impact women face in Northern Ireland due to The Abortion Act of 1967.

The series comes from the producers behind Three Girls, the mini-series focused on three young girls that were groomed, sexually abused, and trafficked by a group of men in Rochdale.

Gwyneth Hughes is the writer behind Three Families, best known for her work on Honour, Vanity Fair, and Remember Me.

The show is based on real people, including a married couple whose first child died of a foetal abnormality and a mum and daughter that must adjust due to teenage pregnancy.

Hughes released a statement with the announcement of the series, expressing the importance of this project.

She said: “I was amazed to discover that thousands of women from Northern Ireland still had to get on planes and ferries and go to England in search of terminations they could not access at home.”

She continued: “Classically the abortion debate is presented as two opposing and immoveable camps – “pro Life”, and “pro Choice”. But as I discovered, it’s not as simple as that.”

The series is bringing together a selection of well-known talent to bring these real-life tales to the screen.

The cast includes Sinéad Keenan (known for My Left Nut, Deep Water), Amy James-Kelly (Gentleman Jack, Safe), and Colin Morgan (The Crown, Humans).

Also in the cast is Own McDonnell (Killing Eve), Kerri Quinn (Coronation Street), and Ger Ryan (The South Westerlies).

Alex Kalymnios is directing the series, she has directed a number of TV projects including episodes in Close Up, Impulse, and Titans.

She has also directed episodes in shows such as The 100, S.W.A.T, The White Princess, Scott and Bailey, and Waterloo Road.

The show was shot on location in Northern Ireland last summer.

The exact filming locations for the new drama series have not been revealed by the BBC.

The BBC has released a trailer for the series, with the trailer dropping last month on April 30.

Three Families will be available to watch May 10 on BBC One.
