Janet Jackson remains one of the highest-earning musicians in the history of the industry. But her fame and fortune has not come without public scrutiny and personal tragedy. The star opened up about her private life, including her marriages, in the Sky documentary.

Who was Janet Jackson’s first husband?

The four-hour documentary sees Janet Jackson return to her hometown in Indiana to reflect on her life.

She discusses everything from family feuds with brother Michael, to becoming an older mother.

Her family and friends also open up about relationships and her journey to fame.

The singer has been married three times in her life, with her first marriage being in 1984.

The 55-year-old was with James DeBarge for a year before their marriage was annulled.

Janet was 18 when she eloped with singer DeBarge, but their partnership didn’t last long.

A&M record executive John McClain believed the marriage would negatively impact her career.

People quoted him as saying at the time: “I tried to convince her that she’s a teen idol and people just wouldn’t accept it.”

After eight months, he persuaded her to annul the relationship.

At the time, Jackson did not say how she felt about the decision, but she was unsure whether the pair would ever get back together and said she was unable to help DeBarge.

DeBarge, now 58, had lived at the Jackson family home Hayvenhurst when the pair were together.

There had been questions raised about his alleged drug addiction and how it would impact Jackson’s career.

After their marriage ended, DeBarge did not remarry, but he has three children.

DeBarge, a practising Christian, performed with brothers El and Mark during a gospel service in late 2007.

In 2012 he went to prison for assault with a deadly weapon and drugs charges.

He was released three years later in 2015.

The singer has not made many public appearances since and tends to stay out of the spotlight.

During Jackson’s new documentary, she dispelled rumours she had a baby with the singer.

The public had paid attention to her weight when she starred in the TV series Fame.

She said: “A lot of the kids thought I was pregnant because I had gained weight.

“I had started taking birth control pills, and back then, you could pick up weight taking them.

“And that’s what happened to me. So that rumour started going around.”

As for Jackson’s other husbands, she was married to René Elizondo Jr between 1991 and 2000.

Twelve years later she married Wissam Al Mana, but they separated in 2017. The pair had a son together, Eissa Al Mana, in January of that year.

After her relationship with René, she met Jermaine Dupri in 2002.

They were never married but were together for seven years until 2009.

Janet Jackson airs on Sky Documentaries and NOW in the UK, as well as Lifetime and A&E in the US.
