Liev Schreiber details ‘very difficult’ scene in A Small Light

Liev Schreiber and Bel Powley talk A Small Light

National Geographic and Disney Plus’ brand-new factual drama series A Small Light will be hitting screens on May 2.

Starring American Ray Donovan actor Liev Schreiber, British actress Bel Powley and Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole, A Small Light tells the story of Anne Frank and her family from the perspective of the people who helped to hide them from the Nazis during World War II.

The eight-part series follows secretary Miep Gies (played by Powley) and her social worker husband Jan (Cole) after they were approached by Otto (Schreiber) to save their lives with the couple successfully keeping the family’s attic existence under wraps for two years.

Thus unfolds a compelling tale of love, hope and defiance amid the terror and atrocities committed by the Third Reich.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Schreiber, 55, opened up about some of the harder moments during filming on A Small Light.

He said: “I think one scene I found really difficult was where he has to ask her for help. It must have been awful.

“It must have been awful for him but it was very difficult because the expectations around something like that are really complicated. But yeah, the scene where Otto asks Miep to basically keep them alive for the next two years.”

Powley agreed and said: “Yes, the role reversal of that is hard.” She went on to say: “I found that odd. I also found it really uncomfortable when Dr Pfeffer asks Miep if she knows somewhere to hide and she has to say ‘no’.”

Adding: “It’s that same kind of role reversal for someone who’s kind of senior to you suddenly seeming so vulnerable.”

Schreiber said: “Someone that you care about and feel responsible for. And I think, certainly in Otto’s case, he felt responsible for and cared deeply about Miep and how he had to say, ‘Will you take care of me?’”

Powley also recalled how she found it “emotional” filming a scene towards the end of the series in which Miep went to a train station to tell Jan how Anne (Billie Boullet) and Margot (Ashley Brooke) hadn’t survived the concentration camps after they were discovered in the attic.

She said the scene really “got” her: “I think the subject matter but by then I knew Billie and Ashley, who play Anne and Margot, really well which made it really sad, so I don’t know, I had a really strong connection with them.

“Also, we were filming in a train station with loads of extras who had shaved their heads. It just felt very real and it was very emotional.

Powley also said she had been “excited” to take on the role of Miep, whom she hailed as a “powerhouse” and “epic” for the risks she took to saves the Franks.
