Loose Women’s Charlene and Judi in tears during tribute to Brenda Edwards’ son Jamal

Loose Women stars Judi Love and Charlene White cried as they paid tribute to their co-star and close friend Brenda Edwards’ son Jamal Edwards.

The panel of the ITV show – which also included Linda Robson, Carol McGiffin and Frankie Bridge – were visibly emotional as they discussed the heartbreaking news that music pioneer Jamal had tragically passed away aged 31.

During Monday 21 February’s special show in honour of Jamal, who helped launch the careers of music superstars like Ed Sheeran and Jessie J, Charlene, 41, explained how she and Judi, also 41, were with Brenda after the news broke.

Addressing the "devastating news", Charlene told viewers watching at home: "Our Brenda's son Jamal Edwards tragically passed away from a short illness."

As she continued to choke back tears, Charlene continued: "Any of you who regularly watch this show know that the love that Brenda had for both Jamal and daughter Tanisha was massive. Her heart was full of so much love for those children."

"So you know just how shocked Brenda is and just how hard it's hit all of us who knew him and, of course, all of us who love Brenda."

The newsreader continued to explain how she and Judi went to see Brenda after they heard the news to show her their support.

She explained: "Judi has joined us on the panel today, you see there's one more of us here today, because we want to do Brenda proud."

Turning to Judi, Charlene added: "You and I were with her last night."

Judi then took over from Charlene, explaining: "People see us on Loose Women and we get on on stage but it's so much bigger than that, the friendships that we build outside and the support we give each other in different areas of our life."

The former Strictly Come Dancing continued: "This is an area, if I'm honest, I don't want to be here doing this. I don't want to have to do this, but we have to."

"It's heartbreaking and all we can do is try and do the best to support Brenda and honour her amazing son in such a difficult time. We just wanted to be there for her yesterday."

Charlene continued: "Judi popped to my house and we drove over and went to see her."

"What do you do with somebody when they lose their child? You don't really know what the right thing to do is," Charlene said, as her voice broke.

"We just wanted to be physically with her and Tanisha, and to give them all the hugs and love that we could possibly give them. Not that it's going to help, but we need them to know that they are loved."

Charlene then read out a section of Brenda's moving statement confirming Jamal's sad passing, which paid tribute to her amazing son and the legacy he's left behind.

As Charlene spoke Brenda's words, Judi broke down in tears and later Charlene cried as she spoke about her friend.

During the handover between This Morning and Loose Women, Charlene acknowledged that it was a very “difficult day” for the panel, but that Brenda had asked them to pay tribute to her late son.

She explained: “On today’s show, we’ll be paying tribute to the powerhouse that is Jamal Edwards.”

“Last night, both Judi [Love] and I were with Brenda and she told us that she wants today’s show to celebrate her son’s achievements.”

“But she also wants us to make her smile and to chuckle, so we’ll be aiming to do that as well.”
