Richard Madeley had audiences convinced he’d fully taken on the role of Alan Partridge after comparing Shamima Begum to the Hitler youth on today’s Good Morning Britain.

The presenter and co-host Susanna Reid had just finished facilitating a debate on whether Ms Begum should be able to return to the UK after she travelled to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State group (IS) in February 2015 at the age of 15.

The former child bride this week insisted she was not a terrorist but ‘a dumb kid who made a mistake’ when she ran away to join Isis.

‘It’s quite an interesting point, and I was thinking about this last night,’ Richard began, as he weighed in on the discussion. ‘Obviously, we had the Nuremberg trials after the war and we hanged quite a few Nazis and imprisoned a lot of others and we let them out eventually.

‘But we didn’t go after the Hitler youth as far as I’m aware. We didn’t go after the Hitler youth, we only went after adults who served in the Hitler regime and that’s something to reflect on, I think.’

Richard then stressed that he doesn’t know where he stands with on the Shamima dilemma.

Susanna was clearly not expecting Richard’s remark and looked a little taken aback as she refrained from commenting.

Audiences, however, couldn’t help but point out a similarity between Richard and Steve Coogan’s comedy character Alan Partridge, a parody of British television personalities.

‘From Mansfield hillbillies to Shamima Begum in the space of two minutes,’ wrote one. ‘And then Richard Madeley goes full Partridge once again.’

‘There is so much crossover between Richard Madeley and Alan Partridge that you forget who said what,’ added another.

Honestly it’s just genius. There’s no way Richard Madeley isn’t a character. https://t.co/oCXdHlgQSW

It looks like this takeaway will be one to add to Richard’s most chaotic Good Morning Britain moments.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
