Succession fans insist Logan Roy ‘crossed out’ Kendall’s name

Succession: Episode 4 preview shared by HBO Max

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Succession season three, episode four.

HBO’s most miserable but wealthy family is back for its fourth season of dodgy dealings and backstabbing, as the Roy family continues with their power struggles and unusual family dynamics in the final season of Succession. This week’s episode has sent fans into a huge frenzy after Logan’s (played by Brian Cox) notes were unveiled leaving the question of whether he wanted Kendall (Jeremy Strong) to be, or not to be, Waystar’s chief.

Succession’s fourth episode, Honeymoon States, kicked off with the Waystar board preparing to have a call to determine who will replace Logan at the top of the company for the time being.

And since the Roy siblings don’t have a board majority, the decision isn’t purely up to them.

There are a lot of people milling around late Logan’s apartment with a good number of them considering themselves fit to take over his old role.

That included the triumvirate of Frank (Peter Friedman), Karl (David Rasche), and Gerri (J.Smith-Cameron), whose conversation about the future of the CEO role added more fuel to the fire.

As the episode continued Frank, one of the executors of Logan’s estate, gets his hands on a sheet of paper found in Logan’s safe.

The piece of paper was written and annotated by Logan before his death, which had been shown to no one, listed an array of topics such as “what music I want at my funeral”.

Whilst Logan’s non-legally binding document provided helpful logistical clarity for some issues, the question surrounding “who should run the company,” only made an already muddled situation worse.

After seeing the note, Shiv (Sarah Snook) questions her father’s wishes but Kendall snaps back: “It sure as f***ing s**t doesn’t say Shiv,” leaving the question of did Logan want Kendall to run the company after all.

Taking to Twitter after the events of episode four played out, fans went back and forth as they theorised whether Logan “crossed out” or “underlined” Kendall’s name.

One user @YouSureIan insisted: “It’s definitely crossed out as much as at would like to believe it’s underlined.”

With @KhairAlHelo adding: “Crossed out. He changed his mind about Ken later on before his death.”

And @lizzietalbott noted: “Cross outs go up. Underlines go down. It was crossed out.”

Meanwhile, others maintained Logan in fact underlined Kendall’s name, suggesting he wanted his middle child to take over the company.

User @wgolden214 wrote: “If you cross something out left-to-right, you start at the TOP, and go down…”

With @tencrowlcy claiming: “It looks like it started as an underline and then completely missed after that

Another @valxbaybeex3 stated: “Underlined. I feel like crossed out would have started top left and gone down diagonally to bottom right. Looks like he just got a little sloppy with his underline.”

One thing that can be certain is Logan’s notes reinvigorated Kendall’s idealistic quest to come out on top.

Kendall then convinced Stewy (Arian Moayed) to back his case, who agreed, while he tells Shiv that her influence will have to remain behind the scenes, leaving her feeling betrayed.

However, Kendall does appear to show mercy to Hugo (Fisher Stevens) when he’s informed that Hugo’s daughter may have participated in some insider trading.

Succession season four continues on HBO Max in the US or Sky Atlantic in the UK.
