The second season of Ted Lasso is finally arriving this Friday on Apple TV+, hot off the heels of a stellar 20 Emmy award nominations. Although the surprise comedy hit started life with a three-season arc in mind, co-creator Brendan Hunt has hinted the series could last well into the future.

Ted Lasso’s overwhelming popularity may force the series’ creators to reconsider their original pitch for the critically acclaimed football sitcom.

Starring Jason Sudeikis as an unashamedly optimistic American Premier League football coach, the new sitcom quickly won over audiences when it premiered last August.

Apple TV+ quickly renewed the winning comedy for another season, and confirmed a third season was also in the works in October 2020.

Ahead of the upcoming premiere, co-creator and Coach Beard star Brendan Hunt recently spoke to ComicBook.com to preview the new season.

During their conversation, he maintained he and fellow creators Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence and Joe Kelly are still envisioning the series to end after its third instalment.

He confirmed: “We’ve always seen it as a three-season situation.”

However, Hunt also admitted the developers weren’t anticipating the level of popularity Ted Lasso would reach so soon after its freshman outing.

The series became an instant hit when the first three episodes were released last August.

In addition to sweeping this year’s Emmy nominations, Ted Lasso also leapt to the top of Apple’s most-streamed series throughout much of last year.

Although the creative team behind the show are keen to wrap up the story after three seasons, audience demand could convince Apple to rethink the current plan.

Brendan Hunt continued: “We still have a three-season story arc in mind, but the thing we weren’t prepared for when we were thinking three seasons, was the degree to which people would take to the show.

“So, perhaps that intention will be challenged a little bit, but that’s where our head is at right now.”

Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond may wrap up their underdog story after season three, but its already iconic cast of characters are still full of potential.

Richmond will of course be trying to claw its way back into the League after its loss to Manchester City resulted in relegation.

Season two is expected to feature the club at its most critical juncture as Ted and the team try to win enough matches to gain a promotion.

If Hunt’s comments can be believed, season three could conclude with Richmond back on top to give the series a sense of closure.

However, plans could change if Ted Lasso’s sophomore season proves just as successful as its first.

The 12-episode follow-up season could once again smash through Apple’s records and urge the streamer to quickly order a fourth before the producers change their minds.

For now, though, fans shouldn’t be too surprised if Sudeikis and the team decide to end on a high and conclude the series with its promised three seasons next year.

Ted Lasso season 2 premieres Friday, July 23 on Apple TV+.
