The Walking Dead: What spin-offs are coming in the future?

As season 11 is well and truly underway, with the first episode of Part Two airing today in the UK on DisneyPlus, The Walking Dead fans may be left in disappointment at the news the popular show is coming to an end in 2022 with an extended 24-episode season in three parts.

Originally based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, the show’s previous 10 seasons – and now the final one – have gripped viewers around the world with heartfelt characters, tense cliffhangers, and just the right amount of gore.

Moving across different locations, farms to prisons to deserted towns, the show has picked up and killed off enough characters with their own histories and stories to tell.

Although it may be the end of an era, The Walking Dead franchise has opened up opportunities for multiple spin-offs, including new show (and the fourth spin-off so far) Tales of the Walking Dead.

Tales of the Walking Dead

The six-part anthology series has begun filming, and will feature both new and established characters from the original show, and include famous faces Olivia Munn and Danny Ramirez, as well as Loan Chabanol, Embeth Davidtz, Jessie T Usher and Gage Munroe.

Staying true to The Walking Dead production team, Tales of the Walking Dead will be executive produced by Scott M Gimple, chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe, as well as showrunner Channing Powell, writer-producer on The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.

Speaking about the upcoming show, which is set to hit screens this summer, Gimple said: ‘Olivia, Danny, Loan, Embeth, Jessie and Gage are the latest massive talents that will bring new worlds of TWD to life with big, daring, different, emotional, shocking, scary, and crazy stories.

‘We’re excited for them to come walk with us.’

Powell added: ‘Somehow we have lucked into the greatest cast – Olivia, Jessie, Embeth, Danny, Loan, Gage…

‘We’ve been hoping these episodes will feel like unique, little films and with this range of actors, we are well on our way.’

A spin-off starring Daryl and Carol

The announcement of the end of The Walking Dead original series felt bittersweet as fans learned two of the show’s stars will receive their own series, expected to premiere in 2023.

The show, which is already in development, features Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, who play Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier.

Announcing the new show, and the ending of the original, Gimple said: ‘It’s been ten years gone bye; what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that.

‘What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic – and supported by the best fans in the world.

‘This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. THE WALKING DEAD lives.’
