There have been a number of shocking character deaths in the hit series Vikings, and one of those belongs to Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), one of the main characters from the very beginning of the series. Her death is one that some fans saw coming based on a prophecy that a son of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) would kill her. However, leading up to it, there is a moment in season 6A, episode 6 that doesn’t seem to make much sense. We have all the details.
Lagertha in ‘Vikings’
Lagertha is the first wife of Ragnar and a fierce shield-maiden when we first meet her. She eventually becomes the Earl of Hedeby after Ragnar sleeps with another woman, getting her pregnant. Lagertha leaves and carves out her own future, eventually taking Kattegat back and becoming the Queen. Throughout the years, she is betrayed on more than one occasion, but it hasn’t stopped her from living her life.
Years later in season 6, Lagertha wants a private life in seclusion, and she finds a spot of land to make a life for herself. Her new digs seem perfect, that is until the bandits her own son, Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig), set free start attacking nearby.
Lagertha fights the bandit leader
Lagertha and the people from the nearby village fight the bandits. They are attacked more than once, and Lagertha’s grandson, Hali (Ryan Henson), is killed by the bandit leader, White Hair (Kieran O’Reilly).
Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars) and some warriors bring reinforcements, and they help out in the next wave of fighting. When things seem to be going their way, and the bandits are being killed or retreating, Lagertha takes on the bandit leader. The fighting is fierce, but Lagertha holds her own. Blows are dealt on both sides, and it seems to be an equal fight at times. They wound each other during the fighting, but only one makes it out alive.
At one point, White Hair knocks her sword out of her hands, and Lagertha braces for his blows. Now on the ground, her shield is almost completely gone from the fighting. But she kills him using it along with a sword when she pretends to surrender. However, she’s wounded in the process as well.
The 1 moment leading up to Lagertha’s death that doesn’t make sense
Lagertha is seriously wounded from the fighting, but she decides now is the time to go back to Kattegat. She goes alone despite a serious wound on her side. She shouldn’t be allowed to go anywhere alone, especially with a wound like that. But when Gunnhild offers to go with her, she declines. Literally anyone could have gone with her instead of her going off alone after sustaining a serious injury and fighting for her life, but no one does, which doesn’t make sense at all. She wants to tell everyone what happened and see her son, but she could have done that while being accompanied. But she rides off on her horse alone, barely making it to Kattegat.
How did Lagertha die?
Lagertha makes it back to Kattegat, but just barely. She falls off her horse, and she’ll soon be killed. But who kills Lagertha? Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø), a son of Ragnar, sees Lagertha, hallucinating that she’s a giant snake and his brother, Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen). He stabs Lagertha multiple times, and she dies in his arms after telling him that it’s what the Seer “foretold.” She comforts him despite him killing her, and it’s a sad turn of events that could have been avoided had someone gone with Lagertha back to Kattegat.
