Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) spent much of Yellowstone season four tightening her stranglehold over her treacherous brother, Jamie (Wes Bentley). However, she was also recovering from the horrific attack which capped off the Paramount Network drama’s third season, and the resulting scars have become a key part of her character.

Yellowstone makeup artist Abigail Steele has revealed the full meaning of Beth’s facial scars.

At the end of season three, Beth’s office is targeted by an explosive package, leaving her fate unknown for more than a year’s wait before the latest outing.

Thankfully, the Dutton Ranch’s shrewd accountant made it out alive, but not without several severe burns.

However, Beth was already left scarred by another terrifying attack in season two, this time orchestrated by the Beck brothers.

Now heading into a fifth season, all of Beth’s scars tell a story, though there is one which has stood out as particularly significant.

In a behind-the-scenes look at the series on Paramount’s YouTube channel, artist Abigail revealed why the scar underneath Beth’s eye has become her favourite.

“It had to be slight enough that even with the nuance of her expression, that it would move with her face like a real scar would,” she explained.

“And it was one of my favourite pieces because she wore it through the whole season.”

Revealing more about the process, Abigail took viewers through the different iterations of the piece throughout the third and fourth seasons.

She continued: “It did change size five times, so we had five different versions of it.

“And it was just beautiful, and even into season four it wasn’t a piece she wore but a colour. And it tells a story.”

Beth is by far one of the most ruthless and stubborn characters in the series, and she rarely lets her vulnerable side show.

Despite her tough outer shell, her scars reveal to the audience that she has still gone through pain and tragedy, even if she doesn’t let her enemies know.

“The scar tells a story that the pain that she bore still remains on the outside,” Abigail added.

Beth star Kelly weighed in: “There’s such dignity in Beth, She doesn’t really talk about what happened to her.”

At the moment, her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) is the only person she shows her sensitive side to.

However, that hasn’t stopped Kelly from opening up to Abigail during production about the complex layers of trauma that have characterised Beth during Yellowstone’s first four seasons.

“Kelly and I had a conversation about that, and it was really unfiltered,” Abigail recalled.

“And then we were both like, you know what? We should tell people about your scars and how they tell a story that’s bigger than just something that’s cool and looks cool in a makeup way.

“It’s so much deeper and there’s something so beautiful about scars that are worn and not covered up.”

Beth’s scars may have faded even more by the time the recently confirmed season five comes around, but they will always be there to remind viewers of her traumatic journey so far.

Yellowstone seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Paramount Plus in the USA. A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.
