City of Columbus to pay $10M to family of police shooting victim Andre Hill

Columbus, Ohio has agreed to pay $10 million to the family of Andre Hill, a black man shot and killed by a city police officer in December 2020, under a settlement.

Under the settlement, the city will also rename a community-center gym after Hill, according to a press release from the office of City Attorney Zach Klein.

Former Columbus police officer Adam Coy shot Hill within 10 seconds of encountering him, according to body camera footage. Coy has been charged with murder.

Attorneys representing the family thanked the city “for doing the right thing by agreeing to a financial resolution with the family and renaming the Brentnell Community Center Gymnasium,” according to the City Attorney’s Office press release.

The settlement — the most ever paid out by Columbus, according to the City Attorney’s Office — will be considered by the Columbus City Council on Monday, May 17.
