Bit of a tight squeeze!? Drivers bemused by TINY car parking spaces at Cornwall car park with barely enough space for HALF a car

  • Motorists quipped parking would only cost half as much because of tiny spaces
  • Locals said everyone would need small vehicles to use the parking spots

Drivers have been left bemused by tiny parking spaces at a Cornwall car park which have barely enough room for half a car.

The new miniscule parking bays at the Belle Vue Short Stay car park in Saltash, Cornwall, are so small that other drivers have said that cars should try and shuffle into them sideways.

The current UK norm for parking spaces is 2.4 metres by 4.8 metres.

The space for manoeuvring (roadways) between bays is six metres.

The dimensions may be revised to suit your particular needs.

Some car parks are now designed with a thick coloured outline around the bays, an area to enable better access.

Motorists quipped that parking would only cost half as much because of the tiny spaces.

According to locals, the spaces have always been an annoyance, but people queried whether they were supposed to be sideways.

Some took to social media on the local Saltash Community Facebook Group, to talk about the tiny spaces.

One of the commenters reasoned that the spaces were designed for miniscule vehicles such as motorbikes and smart cars.

Online, others said: ‘Bet you get fined for parking over the lines’ while another person said: ‘Does this mean you only have to pay half the parking fee?’

However, the rest of the car park has normal-sized spaces.

It is only along the wall where the parking spots are smaller than the others.

According to Cornwall Live, the council were questioned about the new miniature spaces but had not responded.

British Parking Association advice says off-street bays should be 2.4 metres by 4.8 metres long.

But the association says that the dimensions ‘may be revised to suit your particular needs, but remember that good access and wider bays aids efficient use of the parking area.’
