More than 1,000 migrants crossed the Channel yesterday alone, bringing the total that have crossed into the UK in September so far to 2,340.
Around 1,160 people were detected in the 21-mile wide Dover Straits yesterday in 25 boats as they attempted to make the treacherous crossing to the UK, according to Ministry of Defence (MoD) figures.
This is the second time in a fortnight more than 1,000 migrants have made the journey across the channel to the UK in a single day – after August 22 saw a record 1,295 people intercepted.
August as a whole had the highest monthly crossings on record, with 8,644 making the journey by boat.

The MP for Dover, Natalie Elphicke, said sorting out the small boats crisis should be a ‘priority’ for new Prime Minister Liz Truss.
The majority of people were brought into the harbour at Dover throughout the day but both the Dungeness and Hastings Lifeboats were also launched to bring in dozens of asylum seekers.
The crossings continued into this morning as a group of young boys were among those seen arriving in Dover.

It comes a day after 960 were brought ashore on Saturday including men, women and children – as well as a woman in a wheelchair.

This is just over 1,000 short of the number of arrivals for the whole of last year (28,526).
Natalie Elphicke MP for Dover said: ‘France has a moral and international obligation to protect vulnerable people, save lives, stop people smugglers and tackle organised crime. They should not need to be paid to do their duty.
‘It is even more ridiculous that we pay them tens of millions of pounds and get so little in return. This is a shocking waste of taxpayers’ hard-earned money.
‘Sorting out the small boats crisis must be a key priority of the next Prime Minister.’
There was also one boat which made it to the coast unaccompanied in an ‘uncontrolled landing’ on Sunday, the MoD said.
