Northern Line closure map: What stations are shut and when will they reopen?

COMMUTERS in the capital face at least four months of chaos amid London Underground disruptions.

"Critical" improvement works are being carried out on the Northern Line between January and May meaning many stations are closed.

What Northern Line tube stations are closed?

The Bank branch of the Northern Line is not running for 17 weeks from January 15 to mid-May, 2022.

During this time, all stations between between Kennington and Moorgate will be shut for Northern Line passengers.

This includes Elephant & Castle, Borough, London Bridge, and Bank.

Travellers instead have to use the Charing Cross route, or turn to buses to get around.

Stations serving other lines, such the Jubilee at London Bridge and Circle & District at Bank, will operate as normal, though passengers are warned it will be busier than usual.

Why is the Northern Line Bank branch shut?

The Bank branch is closed to carry out "critical" improvement works.

This includes a new Northern Line tunnel, passenger concourse and escalators at Bank station – which forms the third busiest interchange on the London Tube network with Monument.

It is hoped the project will increase the number of passengers the stations can handle by 40 per cent.

Before the pandemic, more than 120 million passengers used the interchange every year.

Builders are also working on step-free access, more direct routes within the station, and a new entrance at Cannon Street.

A Transport for London spokesperson said: "Improving the station is critical to keep London working and growing."

Most of the construction work is taking place below ground to "minimise the impact on this historically significant site", but millions of passengers face longer journeys.

When will the Northern Line Bank branch reopen?

TfL bosses have given mid-May as the estimated finish date for construction work on the Bank branch.

By this time, they hope the new southbound platform will be complete and the concourse will be open.

This should mean the Northern Line via Bank, and all relevant stations, reopens by June 2022.

However, work will continue for the rest of the year on the DLR, Central Line and Cannon Street entrance.
