Prince Harry says some veterans who competed at the Invictus Games would have taken their own lives were it not for the event

• Meghan joined Harry for the opening ceremony and he stayed on for the event

Prince Harry has said some of those who competed at the Invictus Games would have taken their own lives were it not for the event.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Duke of Sussex said: ‘From interviews Invictus did across the park this week, and as some of you shared with me personally, many would have taken their own life had it not been for these Games.

‘You made the choice to be here, to stay with us, and I can’t explain how much all of you mean to us.’

The event was the first time Harry and Meghan returned to Europe since quitting the Royal Family

Quoting Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet, he added: ‘There’s a powerful quote doing the rounds – “The wound is the place where the light enters you”. The very awareness you have of your wound is an opportunity for post-traumatic growth.’ 

Harry, who founded the Games for wounded military veterans, addressed athletes at the end of the week-long event in The Hague. 

The Games marked the first time the Sussexes had returned to Europe together since quitting their roles within the Royal Family and moving to California two years ago.

Meghan joined Harry for the opening ceremony and he stayed on for the duration of the tournament.
