Footage has captured the moment a skater uses an open umbrella to propel himself across a frozen lake in Canada.

Devin Jenson and his friends had been skating on Three Valley Lake near Revelstoke, British Columbia, when he decided to use the umbrella’s canopy to help him coast across the ice.

Mr Jenson, who has been living in Revelstoke since 1989, used the umbrella to skate downwind without moving his feet – in scenes reminiscent to that of the Disney character Mary Poppins.

The skater exposes the broad surface of the open canopy to the wind and allows it to propel him across the ice

During the clip, which was filmed on January 23, Mr Jenson, who had never seen the lake freeze in this way before, holds the umbrella in front of him and lets the gusts of wind pull him along the frozen lake.

With an arm outstretched to expose the broad surface of the open canopy, Mr Jenson give his friends a thumbs up as the umbrella allows him to glide along the solid surface with ease.

He continues to keep his feet still as the umbrella uses the wind to propel him across the ice at speed.

Mr Jenson said he had been playing hockey with his friends when he decided to test out the umbrella over the ice.

He told Storyful: ‘Not only was it snow-free, but it was also perfectly smooth and flat which made for an amazing afternoon.

‘My friend Bill then realised he had an umbrella in his car so we thought we would give that a try to pick up speed.

‘It turned out to be a good idea as we could really cover the lake quickly. It was very fun!’
