Rapist who ‘humiliated and degraded’ two women after he spiked their drinks and was filmed by friend as he carried out sex attack is jailed for seven-and-a-half years

A teenager who spiked two women’s drinks and raped them while his friend filmed the attack six years ago has finally been jailed.

Bradley Carman, then 17, ‘drugged’ his victims’ drinks before raping them and sharing footage of the ordeal online in 2016.

The traumatised women had to wait six years for Carman to be brought to justice due to delays in the legal system. No charges have ever been bought forward against the friend who filmed.

Carman, from Sturry near Canterbury, has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years, and will be on the Sex Offenders Register for life. The 22-year-old tried to claim he had consensual sex with his victims.

Jurors heard that the two women became very unwell after Carman either slipped chemicals into the drinks or made them as strong as possible to knock his unsuspecting victims unconscious. 

Canterbury Crown Court was told the attack was filmed by his friend, and, while Carman did not start filming his victims, he became a ‘willing and enthusiastic’ participant in it.

One victim said the horrifying ordeal had driven her to attempt suicide because she felt ‘alone and helpless’.

She told his sentencing hearing: ‘I thought death was my only way out’, and said she still gets flashbacks and nightmares, and sometimes wakes up crying.

The other victim told the court the attack stripped her of her confidence and left her with anxiety and trust issues.

During the trial, one victim said she was knocked unconscious after just one and a half drinks.

She told jurors she ‘dipped in and out of consciousness’ during the ordeal while Carman’s pal filmed her and laughed. 

Canterbury Crown Court was told the attack was filmed by Carman’s friend 

‘We had one-and-a-half drinks and after that I don’t remember what happened,’ the victim said. ‘I remember coming to and Bradley was on top of me, I don’t remember what [happened] in between.

‘I was really, really out of it. I wasn’t in the right position, I didn’t say no, I didn’t say yes either. I couldn’t do anything to stop it, I wasn’t in the right position to say no.

‘Someone was filming it, I remember someone filming it, it was dark and he had his flash on, laughing.’

Carman’s second victim said she was set on after becoming unwell when she finished her drink.

She added: ‘[It started] getting really weird, we started to feel not necessarily paralytic, but it wasn’t right.’

The court heard they both reported the attacks in the following months, claiming they may have been spiked.

Carman’s barrister Kieran Brand claimed the victims’ evidence was ‘inconsistent’ and said they behaved in a ‘reckless, impulsive manner’. He claimed they had felt ‘shameful’ once a video of the attack began circulating.

However, jurors unanimously found Carman guilty.

Sentencing the rapist, Judge Mark Weekes told him: ‘There was evidence from both [during your trial] that it was recorded by your friend, and while you might not be responsible for that, you were a willing and enthusiastic participant.

‘You chose to fight this trial on what I deemed to be the clearest and compelling evidence.’
