Ah, the age-old question: Is a hot dog a sandwich? If you said no, does your answer change if the hot dog is in the shape of a hamburger patty and served on a bun? Because that’s a thing now.

They’re called hot dog rounds, and the world does not need them, yet the world is intrigued. It’s confusing, it’s weird it’s… genius?

Hot dog rounds first went viral in July 2021 and come from New Jersey butcher Rastelli’s. It claims that the flatter surface is better at holding condiments and creates more caramelization on the grill.

“We set out to improve the hot dog,” Rastelli’s told Fox News. “Like many people, our customers were accustomed to slicing their hot dog down the middle before grilling to increase surface area for caramelization and flavor — so when the really busy moms and dads asked if we had any pre-sliced hot dogs, we started thinking.”

Some people were quick to compare the hot dog rounds to bologna, which is essentially thinly sliced hot dog meat. However, Rastelli’s said its hot dog rounds are different because they use black Angus beef and premium pork, which they smoke with a blend of woods and then finish in the oven.

Rastelli’s Hot Dog Rounds, 12-Pack, $35

$35 at Rastelli’s

Don’t worry, you don’t have to be in New Jersey to try these babies either. Rastelli’s ships nationwide, but you can also get them online from QVC. You can get a 12-pack of the 3.5-ounce hot dog rounds for only $35 on Rastelli’s, or at QVC, you can get a 24-pack for $109.98. If you want to try them, you should move quick, too. For the first half of this summer, they were sold out. Luckily, they’re finally back in stock.

One might argue that hot dog rounds are the perfect cookout dish for freaking out your friends and then impressing them upon their first bite. And now you only have to buy one type of bun if you plan to serve hamburgers, too! Oh, the many benefits.
