The Wheel of Time has been compared to other franchises such as Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. One reason for this is the sweeping nature of the storytelling, as Moiraine (played by Rosamund Pike) and other characters go on a journey which stretches across a whole world.  The Amazon Prime Video series was filmed in a variety of breathtaking locations to bring the novel’s setting to life.

Where was The Wheel of Time filmed?

When the late Robert Jordan first wrote The Wheel of Time back in 1990, he was inspired by the storied legacies of Celtic and Eastern European mythologies.

As the series includes elements of Eastern European culture, it felt only appropriate to film the show there.

The bulk of the series was shot in Prague, Czech Republic, and its surrounding areas.

Not only did they film in the city, which doubled as the ancient and mystic aesthetic of the show, but the surrounding mountain regions and forests helped portray the long journey the characters go on.

Filming also took place in Slovenia and Dubrovik, Croatia.

Season two has already been confirmed by Amazon Prime, with rumours circulating filming could take place in Tenerife and Morocco, standing in for Aiel Waste.

Filming wasn’t easy for production, as it had to tackle coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

Shooting actually commenced in September 2019 but was halted in March 2020.

Production didn’t restart until April 2021, finally wrapping in May.

However, filming is already underway again with production back in Prague.

The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios, though neither have confirmed where indoor studio filming has taken place.

Where is The Wheel of Time set?

The Wheel of Time is set in a purely fictional universe and is inspired by the landscapes and cultures of Europe.

The series takes place in an unnamed world, which is both in the distant past and simultaneously, the distant future of Earth.

This is due to the cyclical nature of the story’s world, making the past and future occur at the same time.

Names such as The Randlands or World of the Wheel are names chosen by fans of the books to refer to the universe of the novels and now show.

One iconic location from the books transitioning to the screen is Shadar Logoth, a dark and mysterious ancient city.

Speaking to SlashFilm about the location, showrunner Rafe Judkins said: “This is iconic in the books and you need to feel like you haven’t been in this place before.

“We actually built from scratch an entire back lot just for that sequence, which is a risky spend as a producer, but it was something that I really felt we should do because it continues to expand the world for these kids.

“I mean, they’re just from a small mountain village.”

The Wheel of Time will premiere on Friday November 19, exclusively on Amazon Prime.
