Carolyn Bessette Kennedy could be the inspiration behind Meghan’s wedding dress

We’re just days away from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding on May 19 and one of the highlights for most, will be the dress, of course.

London-based Australian duo Ralph & Russo are the favourites to design Meghan’s bridal gown for her big day and there has been much speculation as to what style it will be.

Many think the former actress has given away clues in previous interviews from over the years, especially while filming her wedding scenes as Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits.

In an exclusive interview with Glamour back in 2016, ahead of the season 5 finale, where and she and love interest Mike Ross (played by Patrick J Adams) almost tie the knot, she spoke about bridal style.

While she wore an Anne Barge ‘Versailles’ dress for the show, she talked about a little about her own inspiration and preferences, stating: "I personally prefer wedding dresses that are whimsical or subtly romantic."

And when asked about her favourite celebrity wedding dress, she replied: "Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Everything goals."

Carolyn Bessette married John F. Kennedy Jr (the son of US president JFK) in a quiet ceremony on a tiny island off the coast of Georgia on September 21 in 1996.

Despite huge press attention during their relationship, the couple managed to pull off a secret wedding and Carolyn (a former PR exec for Calvin Klein) wore a pearl-white crepe dress by then-little-known designer Narciso Rodriguez.

The slip-dress style gown hugged Carolyn’s slender figure and John kissed her outstretched gloved hand. It was very minimalist for its time, as was her pared-down hair and make-up, and it turned Rodriguez into a household name.

Since then, a number of A-listers have worn his designs, including Diane Kruger, Claire Danes and Michelle Obama.

Sadly John, Carolyn and her older sister Lauren tragically died in a plane crash in July 1999.

Much like her mother-in-law Jackie Kennedy, Carolyn became an influential fashion figure, renowned for her understated style. Pencil skirts, cigarette pants, crisp shirts and little black dresses were staples in her wardrobe.

She appears to be a key inspiration for Meghan, who favours simplicity and neutrals with her own outfits. Even Meghan’s ‘messy bun’ has an element of Carolyn about it, who often rocked an updo.

While we imagine that Meghan’s wedding dress won’t be as slinky as Carolyn’s, we reckon there’ll be a nod to her muse somewhere for her big day.
