Donald Trump didn’t deserve any help from the folks at Saturday Night Live the last few years… but if one former cast member is to be believed, he may have gotten it anyways!!
Taran Killam, who was on SNL for several seasons leading up to Trump’s election as President of the United States, revealed in a podcast interview this week that cast members were asked to go easy on Trump leading up to his campaign!
According to Killam, who made the comments while speaking on Matt Gourley‘s I Was There Too podcast this week, SNL boss Lorne Michaels allegedly ordered his cast to “go easy” on Trump in the early days of his presidential campaign — just so they could get Trump to come host the show one day.
Killam revealed in part (below):
“Lorne was being so specific about what we could and couldn’t say about him, and he was dictating a lot of the settings. At that point — the first CNN interview he was doing — and that was sort of looking like what we thought we were going to do, and Lorne’s like, ‘It’ll be too old news by then, and you know, you don’t want to vilify him. You know, he’s like any New York taxi driver. I know him, I’ve seen him around at parties for years and years, and he just says whatever it is he’s thinking, and that’s his thing. But you know, you have to find a way in that makes him likable.’”
Hmmm… a few weeks after that, Trump’s named popped up on the show hosting schedule — and, Killam says, castmates quickly figured out why Michaels had requested that treatment.
Of course, Killam’s account doesn’t come without controversy; both NBC and Michaels himself declined to comment, but an insider with “knowledge of the show’s production” said that it was “not accurate” that Lorne asked the cast to go easy on Trump.
The insider continued by saying that Michaels never had that type of conversation with the staff, or the writers, and that’s “just now how Lorne runs the show.” Well OK then…
