It’s the holy grail of air travel; paying for an economy ticket only to bag a free upgrade to first class when you arrive at the airport.
Of course this doesn’t happen every day, but there are a few easy tricks to try and put the odds in your favour when you walk up to the check-in desk.
Asking really nicely won’t necessarily do the trick – but look the part too, and suddenly your chances increase dramatically.
In fact, flight attendants have spilled the beans on just what you should be wearing to try and snap up a free upgrade – and it’s not all about designer clothing.
Members of cabin crew opened up to Who What Wear and revealed the outfit that’s most likely to get the staff on side to get that coveted golden ticket.
One attendant told the publication: "It definitely helps your chances. When we fly, we have a strict dress code to follow.
"No jeans or trainers – so I always go for tight black trousers and a blazer or a dress. For men, chinos or trousers and a shirt are worn."
You won’t need to break the bank and splash out on designer brands though – in fact, another attendant stresses that it’s best to look like you haven’t tried too hard.
They explained: "For an upgrade, it’s all about looking the part. Smart but understated.
"You should look like you travel often. But don’t be dripping in designer clothing. It helps; someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren’t dressed suitably."
Of course, travelling in a smart dress or jacket doesn’t always make for the comfiest of outfits, especially if you’re going long-haul, but you can always pack a back up comfortable outfit in your hand luggage should you need to change for comfort later during the flight. (Just make sure these look smart too!)
Oh, and for an extra boost it’s worth memorising this unusual phrase that one frequent flyer claims has ALWAYS got her upgraded.
