Less than 2 months after being crowned as the most viewed video on YouTube with 3 billion views, the Latin duo’s ‘Despacito’ breaks a new record with 4 billion views.
It’s been 9 months since the release of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito”, but it seems many people are still hooked on the song. The music video was unveiled on January 12 and crowned as the most viewed on YouTube on August 3, defeating Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” and PSY’s “Gangnam Style”. On Wednesday, October 11, it continued its success by setting a new record on YouTube with 4 billion views, making it the first video ever to hit the number of views.
Following the announcement, Fonsio expressed his gratitude on Twitter. He wrote in Spanish, “4 billion views!! Gracias por el apoyo familia. Gracias Puerto Rico,” which translated as, “4 billion views!! Thank you for supporting family. Thanks Puerto Rico.”

“Despacito” means “slowly” in English, but it seems its YouTube’s viewership shows no sign of going slowly. It’s been revealed that the latest 100 million YouTube views happened in just a week and a half, accumulating at 14.7 million views each day in average. It beat Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” music video, which had an average of 12.3 million views each day, despite the fact that Swift released her music video later than the duo.
The YouTube record was not the only record that “Despacito” broke. It set Vevo record for most views of a Spanish-language video in 24 hours with 5.4 million hits and the fastest video to reach 200 million views, 2 billion views and 3 billion views. Nielsen Music’s U.S. Mid Year also reported that the song had been streamed 4.6 billiion times in just six month, setting another record.
It probably won’t be the last record that the song is going to break. “Despacito” is currently tied as the longest-running No. 1 song in U.S. history with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” which set record as the longest song to stay atop the Hot 100 back in 1995.
