2017’s porn was defined by MILFs, lesbians and Japanese cartoons

In 2017, women put all sorts of horrible things in their vaginas and men injected, implanted and struggled with their gigantic penises.

But on the less painful and more pleasurable side of what goes on below the belt, porn in 2017 was all about the continuing decline of teens, the preeminence of mothers, and the rise of one very particular Japanese kink.

That, at least, is according to Pornhub, the online emporium of smut that is the 35th most-viewed website in the world, according to Alexa, Amazon’s data analytics arm. Sitting on a list that has Google, YouTube and Facebook ranked 1, 2 and 3, Pornhub is the highest-ranked porn site on Alexa’s list.

Pornhub’s massive audience — they had 28.5 billion visitors in 2017 — gives them a gigantic window into the world’s porn-viewing habits.

The biggest change in viewing habits the site noticed was the rise of “porn for women,” a search term which saw a 1,400 percent increase in 2017, according to the porn site’s year in review report.

Also seeing big search bumps were parodies for the adult-themed cartoon “Rick and Morty,” as well as fidget spinners and Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) porn. ASMR is a video genre that highlights ambient sounds which supposedly induce “braingasms” in viewers, according to The Independent. One can only imagine what happens when you add porn to the equation.

However, the defining search term of 2017 was clearly “Hentai.” The Japanese animated pornography typically features men and women with unrealistically large erogenous zones taking part in sexual activities too weird to be described. Hentai was the second most searched term in the world, according to Pornhub.

“The world is moving at a pace the likes we have never seen before and as such, stress levels have gone way up. Hentai is a way for people to disconnect from reality and delve into the world of total fantasy, forgetting about all the stresses that real life brings,” Dr. Laurie Betito, sex therapist and director of the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center, said in the report.

“Good, bad or indifferent, Hentai is an escape, not much different than seeing a sci-fi movie at a local theater for a couple of hours of mindless distraction.”

The only search term that topped Hentai was “lesbians” which has been the top dog for three years running.

Below lesbians and Hentai was a very particular group of women: MILFs, stepmoms and moms. The three forms of mothers have been in the top six search terms since 2014 and their dominance continued in 2017. Rounding out the top six was “stepsister.”

Non-familial teens were the big loser in 2017. Long the queens of the most-searched list, teens have slipped all the way down to 7th place in this year’s list right next to “Japanese” in 8th, “massage” in 9th and “anal” in 10th.

Obviously, Pornhub users don’t just search for genres of porn, they often come to the site to see their favorite porn stars. Riley Reid was the site’s #1 lady following her 2016 Female Performer of the Year award from the AVNs, porn’s version of the Oscars.

Trailing right behind Reid were a bevy of beauties who are either not working in porn anymore or never got into the business in the first place. Mia Khalifa, who has tried to turn Twitter trolling into a sports broadcasting career, came in second place while Sarah Palin lookalike Lisa Ann came in third. Kim Kardashian’s ever-popular sex tape put her in fourth place followed by Sunny Leone who has gone from being 2003 Penthouse Pet of the Year to being a mainstream Bollywood star in India.
