Arsenal want Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos – and want to sign TWO centre halves this summer.
Greek defender Papastathopoulos, 29, is available for around £15m and Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat knows him well.
But Arsenal want to bolster the defence further with West Brom’s Jonny Evans available for £3m while they have also held talks with Freiburg over their Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu.
It comes because Arsenal are ready to offload defensive flop Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny is out until at least Christmas with a long term Achilles injury.
Gunners chiefs are still chasing defensive targets even though a new manager has yet to come in which points heavily towards Mikel Arteta being given the job in a head coach role.
Arsenal players are now convinced it is Arteta who is a coach at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola and would work within the club’s structure at the Emirates.
Arsenal also want a holding midfielder and, as revealed in March, a new keeper with Bayer Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno their No1 choice.
