David Robertson in familiar place with unfamiliar role

MINNEAPOLIS — David Robertson’s smile said it better than any words.

As Robertson crossed the Yankees’ quiet clubhouse following a 6-1 loss to the Twins on Monday at Target Field, a smile formed on his face as he recognized a few media members waiting at his locker.

Todd Frazier, Tommy Kahnle and Robertson arrived at Target Field in the first inning of the game, and by the time they unpacked and had a quick lunch it was the third inning. Finally, a sense of normal was in place after listening to several trade scenarios Tuesday night and having their flight from Chicago delayed.

“It was a whirlwind,’’ said Robertson, who had to leave a wife and two-week-old daughter in Chicago. “Saw a rumor I was going to Boston and I go right back to New York where you belong.’’

The 32-year-old Robertson, who is signed through next year at $13 million after making $12 million this season, gives the Yankees’ pen another experienced arm who has had plenty of big-league success. What he doesn’t have is the velocity to match Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances and Kahnle.

“It’s a very good group. I am the softest thrower,’’ said Robertson, who had 13 saves in 14 chances for the White Sox this season.

Former White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Robertson’s experience in New York from 2008-2014 — when he saved 39 games as Mariano Rivera’s replacement before leaving as a free agent — will serve him well.

“He will mix in there real easy,’’ Ventura said of the right-handed reliever who set up Rivera in 2013, the all-time saves leader’s final year in the majors.

Though Robertson has returned to the Yankees, many of his teammates are new.

“There are a lot of new faces I have to get to know,’’ Robertson said.

As for when he will pitch and in what role, Robertson echoed Frazier and Kahnle.

“I have no idea. I don’t have an ego,’’ Robertson said. “I will pitch whenever they need me to.’’
