The mystery of the Jets backup quarterback is solved.
Christian Hackenberg will serve as the team’s No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Bills. Bryce Petty is inactive for the game.
Todd Bowles wanted to see how Petty warmed up before making a decision, indicating this decision was about his knee, not performance.
There was a question about who would be Josh McCown’s backup after a training camp competition in which Hackenberg saw more action than Petty, but Petty outplayed Hackenberg.
Petty has a sprained knee that he suffered in the third preseason game, against the Giants on Aug. 26. Petty practiced all week.
Another inactive who was a bit of a surprise was wide receiver Jeremy Kerley. The Jets signed him Tuesday. He must not have been able to get up to speed quickly enough on the offense.
The other inactives are CB Derrick Jones, S Rontez Miles, G Dakota Dozier, TE Neal Sterling and TE Jordan Leggett.
