John Cena has spoken for the first time about his shock new look.
The 16-time WWE world champion surprised fans when he showed off his longer hair recently.
And he was criticised on social media as he made a triumphant return to the ring last week, when he partnered Bobby Lashley to defeat Elias and Kevin Owens at WWE Super Show-Down in Melbourne.
But Cena insists he is unfazed and explained the reasons behind his change in style – and why he won’t be reverting to his shorter locks anytime soon.
"I’m growing out my hair for a film that I’m doing in China," he said, speaking on the Today Show referring to Project X which he has been shooting alongside action movie legend Jackie Chan in Shanghai.
"I have to kind of manage it but the internet was… man, I’ve been getting a lot of flack for it. It’s crazy.
"Everybody hates it."
But Cena, 42, says he will not cut it off because he has two months left of filming and that the criticism doesn’t bother him.
"When I came back I wrestled in Australia, man, it was like I had killed people’s childhoods," he added.
"So for that reason, I’m going to keep it, and I was going to cut it right after the movie is over.
"I’ve still got two months of filming but I’m going to keep it just because I like embracing the uncomfortable – and it’s certainly a great way to handle negativity."
Cena is scheduled to return to the ring in November in the WWE World Cup at the Crown Jewel pay-per-view in Saudi Arabia.
