Rashford had nicked the ball off Seagulls defender Lewis Dunk midway through a frustrating opening period for United.
And as he surged into the right of the box, looking up to check his options, he must surely have seen an eager Martial hovering in space near the penalty spot.
But Rashford failed to deliver a pass and the swarming Brighton defence eventually cleared the danger.
