Real Madrid have reportedly rejected Liverpool’s opening bid for Marco Asensio.
Spanish media claimed earlier this month that the Reds contacted Madrid officials to open official dialogue after making a “firm offer” for the Spanish international.
Liverpool have grown frustrated in their pursuit of Nabil Fekir after failing to get a deal for the Lyon star over the line before the World Cup.
However, they have been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Asensio with Mundo Deportivo reporting that Bernabeu bosses have turned down Liverpool’s £158million offer.
The publication claims Asensio is also happy in Madrid, despite a lack of game time.
Asensio has a €700m (£616m) release clause in a contract that runs to 2023.
Asked about Kop interest, the 22-year-old refused to rule out the possibility of a move to the Premier League by saying: “Liverpool? When the World Cup is over, we’ll talk about that sort of thing, now I’m focused on selection for Spain."
Will Marco Asensio be an automatic starter for Real Madrid next season?
